Wildfire Readiness and Property Protection

Our beautiful forested landscape is one of the RM of Reynolds’ greatest assets, but it also requires vigilance against the threat of seasonal wildfire. Protecting our community is a shared effort between the Manitoba Wildfire Service and our residents.

This page outlines the essential “FireSmart” principles you can apply to your property to significantly reduce fire risk, including vegetation management and structural upgrades. You will also find critical information on how to report a fire, how to stay informed during an active threat, and the steps to take if an evacuation order is issued.

Wildfire Reporting

  • Immediate Danger: Call 911 for new wildfire reports or imminent threats to life and property.

  • TIP Line: Call 1-800-782-0076 (Monitored 24/7).

  • Note: TIP Line response is limited to daylight hours. Do not call the TIP line or 911 for general updates.

Evacuation Due to Fire

The decision to evacuate is made based on the immediate threat to life and community safety. When an Order to Evacuate is issued by the Fire Chief, RCMP, or Manitoba Wildfire Service, residents will be notified directly by emergency teams and will be provided with specific instructions on where to go.

  • Meeting Points: Establish a family meeting point outside the risk area in case you are separated when the order is called.

  • Essential Items: Gather “Go-Kits” medications, eyeglasses, insurance papers, and clothes for immediate departure.

  • Vulnerable Residents: Make immediate arrangements to move children and persons with disabilities.

  • Pets & Livestock: Move animals to a safe area early. Do not leave pets behind; ensure you have their food and supplies ready.

  • Registration: “Evacuees will be told where to evacuate to, not just to evacuate.” All residents must check in at the designated Registration Center. This is mandatory to ensure everyone is accounted for and to help reunite families.

  • Stay Informed: Monitor the RM website, local radio, and Alert Ready notifications for “All Clear” updates.

Residential Checklist: The 10m Priority Zone

Protecting your home begins with the “Priority 1” zone—the area within 10 metres of your house. By managing vegetation and using fire-resistant materials in this space, you create a buffer that can significantly slow the spread of a wildfire and protect your structures from radiant heat.

  • Vegetation Management: Clear all dead plants, fallen leaves, and weeds. Choose fire-resistant plants for your garden and avoid highly flammable shrubs.

  • Landscaping: Use non-flammable materials, such as rock or gravel, for landscaping within the 10m perimeter.

  • Structural Protection: Ensure chimneys and stovepipes are equipped with spark arresters.

  • Vents and Openings: Install ember-resistant vents or 1/8″ metal screens to prevent sparks from entering your attic or crawlspace. Check existing screens regularly for holes or damage.

  • Water Access: Ensure you have a garden hose long enough to reach all structures and fire pits on the property.

  • Sprinkler Systems: Consider installing roof-mounted sprinklers as an added layer of protection.

  • Rural Water Supply: In remote areas, maintain a dedicated water source, such as a well, pond, or large storage tank, specifically for firefighting use.
